The Burdekin Shire Council and residents strive to make Burdekin the best rural community in Australia in which to live. With its beautiful climate and natural assets, friendly atmosphere, excellent shopping, award winning events and so much more - it certainly comes close.
The Shire's main towns are Ayr and Home Hill ,which are separated by the landmark "Silverlink" bridge, the longest bridge of its kind in Australia. The towns are hubs of activity, with a wonderful range of speciality stores and fine dining to experience. There are beautiful beaches to explore plus the amazing Burdekin river and its estuaries. This area is reknowned for excellent fbarramundi fishing, great prawns and delicious mud crabs.
The Burdekin River Bridge has an interesting history. Uniquely, it did not have a name for 44 years. Burdekin MP Steve Rodgers officially named the bridge at an on site ceremony on 28 August 2001. The bridge took ten years to complete, finishing just before the wet season of 1957. The bridge is 770 meters in length and is longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Locals know how to have a good time and many events are held each year to embrace this fun attitude.
