Mackay -QLD

Characteristics

Located about halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, Mackay truly is the Heart of Queensland.

This coastal city of over 78,000 residents is positioned 400 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn, with its boundaries extending from Alligator Creek in the south to the O'Connell River in the north.

It covers an area of 2820 square kilometres on the mainland and a further 100 square kilometres of islands, including Lindeman, Brampton, Keswick and St Bees.

Mackay is the largest sugar producing area in Australia and is home to several sugar mills, one of Australia's four sugar refineries and the largest bulk sugar terminal in the world.

The city is also a vital service centre for the mines of the nearby Bowen Basin, which produces 85 per cent of the state's coal.

The beef cattle and tourism industries are also important to Mackay's economic base and this diversity has helped the city to maintain its prosperity despite fluctuating markets and other challenges.

With its coastal location and an annual average temperature of 23 degrees celsius, Mackay offers residents and visitors alike a relaxed, tropical lifestyle that combines all the facilities of a modern regional city with an array of natural wonders.

The city boasts numerous beachside suburbs, as well as inner-city living and residential acreages close to town.

The Coral Sea, deserted islands, the Great Barrier Reef and fantastic fishing and scuba diving are all on our doorstep. While those who prefer to stay on dry land can find plenty of space at our many beaches.

The mountains - complete with their crystal-clear streams, rainforests and unique flora and fauna - are also an easy drive away and offer cool, green respite as summer temperatures climb.

And of course there is Pioneer River, one of the few blue-water rivers on the Queensland coast. A mecca for fishermen or those just wanting to take in the wonderful views, its easy pace sets the tone for our city - a place where we're never too rushed to enjoy a beautiful day.
